I've been believing in something so distant
as if I was human... Lily had been extremely stupid. There wasn’t many times that it could be said of her, as usually she was seen as someone rather smart. But, Lily had decided to read and walk at the same time and ended up falling down a flight of stairs and had to watch as her ankle swelled up pretty badly. She had tried to walk normally, but unfortunately there was no way she’d be able to get to her class with her ankle the size of a grapefruit. So, though she didn’t particularly like the Hospital Wing, she’d forced herself to grin and bare the pain until she got to the hospital wing to get it sorted out.
After she’d gotten it sorted out, and it hadn’t took that long, she sighed and sat on the one of the stairs. She had a class with the Slytherins. She didn’t want to face a bunch of stuck up jerks laughing at her for her stupidity. And she knew they would. It wasn’t often that Lily would skip a lesson, but today she really couldn’t be bothered. It wasn’t like she’d really miss a lot, she’d done the reading for Charms, and she could definitely catch up if she asked Flitwick what they were doing.
So she sat there, watching silently as the world went by. Okay, sitting on a step on the main stairs probably wasn’t very good, especially if a teacher came along. She was head girl so she definitely should have been in class to be a good influence. But then again, if she was being a good influence in class, how could she be a good influence to the younger students? They wouldn’t see her in class. Though then she wouldn’t be in the corridors and therefore wouldn’t be a bad influence.
She sighed a bit. In reality, she really should go to her class, but that would involve facing the Slytherins. She couldn’t face them. Not after her klutz attack. She didn’t want to give them another reason to taunt her about. Things seemed to be getting worse with the mudblood calling. It was getting to the point that she really did just want to turn to them and shout that she didn’t care anymore. Of course she did, every time someone said it, it stung a bit. Sighing, she sat back and pushed her hair out of her face, deciding once and for all that she wouldn’t go.

There were two ways Severus could look at the Charms class he was on his way to. On the one hand Charms was the bane of his existence, one of the only subjects he didn't particularly enjoy. Maybe it was because Professor Flitwick's voice was just a tad too nasaly. Perhaps it was because it's hard to believe you're learning anything from someone more than two feet shorter than you are. On the other hand though, this was a built in part of his week when he got to look at Lily as much as he wanted to. She couldn't do anything about them having class together, not really, and he liked to think she wouldn't have even if she could have. That probably wasn't true, but he would believe it until proven wrong.
He liked to take the second approach to looking at the class.
On his way to class he began to go over the reading they had been assigned in his head. It was all about placing temporary charms on inanimate objects to make them sing songs only the caster could head. Severus was not entirely sure why that was at all useful or productive but he had been told that Charms were important and in school that's all that mattered. He was trying to remember what the incantation to stop the singing was and coming up to staircase when he saw it: the red hair he adored. Stopping dead in his tracks he looked down at her, sitting on a step, watching the world pass her by. She looked exquisite, but then again she always looked wonderful to him.
Severus wondered what she was doing there, Lily was usually early for all her classes as a means to set a good example for the other members of her House. Was she sick? Had something upset her? Did James Potter finally take his flirtation too far? Anxiety coursed through him as he thought of a list of horrible possibilities as to why she was sitting there as though class weren't going to start in just a few moments. Severus wished he could see her face, tell if she was unhappy or crying. He knew it would do no good, that seeing him would probably only upset her more but he couldn't help it. Even though she had told him time and time again that she wanted nothing to do with him anymore he could not believe it. Deep down, underneath everything that had happened since they came to Hogwarts, underneath her irrational feelings for James Potter, underneath the stubborness that kept her from accepting his apology, Severus knew that Lily still cared for him, still wished they could be friends as much as he did. And for that reason he cared that something could keep her from attending a class, something she never would have dreamed letting occur when he had been her friend.
Sighing to himself, Severus wondered how long it would be before she turned around and found him looking at her, standing there like he had been struck dumb. Maybe he had been to be doting after a mudblood like he was. But he didn't think of her like that anymore, didn't take part when his housemates sang choruses of the word in classes. The only place that hellish word that had cost him his dearest friend resided anymore was in his mind, he had vowed to never say it aloud again. He would die with reformed lips. If only he could prove that to her somehow.

I've been believing in something so distant
as if I was human... She hadn’t noticed him at first, too busy trying to justify herself missing a Charms class. She frowned slightly when she felt like someone was watching her. Squirming slightly, she shivered slightly, before turning and seeing Snape. No wonder she felt so weird. Sighing, she forced herself not to glare at him. “What do you want? Come here to taunt me? Yes, okay, it’s true, I fell down the stairs, laugh it up then leave me alone.” She snapped at him, rubbing her face tiredly. She couldn’t be bothered with Snape bullshit. It was tiring enough to just try and get on with her life, but with him here, it just made it harder.
The truth was, Lily would have loved to be friends with Snape again, but not Snape, Sev, the one she met when she just learned she was a witch, the one who was nice and kind and fun. Snape now was horrible and cruel and a wannabe serial killer. It didn’t sit well with Lily, nothing he said sat well with her anymore. Not since he called her a… She shuddered at the thought. She didn’t even want to remember that. If she could obliviate that memory out of her mind forever, she would. Then maybe she could be friends with him again.
The problem was she didn’t trust him anymore. And because she didn’t trust him, she didn’t want to be friends with him. How could you be friends with someone you didn’t trust? She just wanted to be free to think for herself and not think about how bad things could be. Lily wasn’t one to continue to talk to someone who betrayed her trust, and that was exactly what Snape had done. He’d called her the one thing he knew she hated, he’d put her down and shown his dark side of how much he loathed her kind. And for that, she’d never forgive him.
Turning away from him she bit her lip and forced herself not to tear up at the memories. Her blood boiled with rage at what he’d done to her. He hadn’t even spoken and already she didn’t want him to. She felt sick with anger at him for what he’d done.

As soon as Severus heard that she had fallen down the stairs he started to panic. His eyes widened and the took an instinctive step forward as though to save her from this plight. It was irrational really, she was quite obviously fine and being the smart girl that she was had probably already made it to the Hospital Wing and back. However, that did not stop him from worrying about her. Lily was obviously upset that she had been so careless and injured herself and had they still been freinds she probably would have leaned into his shoulder and cried out her humiliation while lovingly teased her about behaving like a klutz. But they were not friends anymore and she seemed to think he was there to make fun of her. If only that blasted girl would get over her own stubbornness and realize nothing was farther from the truth.
"Are you okay?"
It was only after the words had left his mouth that he realized what was actually happening. For the first time in a long time Lily had taken the time to scold him. On a normal day she probably would have just ignored him and hoped he had left, or pretended not to have noticed him, but today she had spoke to him. And he was speaking back! They were somewhat engaged in a conversation and Severus could not help but smile. All of his hard work had paid off. She might still be angry with him but at least they were making progress. At least she was telling him to go away now instead of merely hoping that he would or going away herself. Never mind if the only reason she was still sitting there could be in part because she had recently injured herself. [/size]

I've been believing in something so distant
as if I was human... She glared at him when he spoke back to her. “You really think you’re funny don’t you?” She snapped at him. She stood up glaring at him. “You’re not, don’t pretend like you give a damn, because it’s been obvious you don’t since fifth year.” Shaking her head, she pushed her hair out of her face and picked up her bag. She didn’t want to talk to him, she didn’t know why she’d started a conversation up with him. She had to decide if she wanted to leave and not go to class, or if she’d actually go to class now to try and get away from him.
It had always confused her why he tried to be nice. They both knew that she wasn’t ever going to be friends with him again, so it made no sense to her that he’d try to be friends with her when it was obvious she loathed him and wanted nothing to do with him. She wondered if he’d learned that she was now friends with James, that they were Head Boy and Girl together. He probably did know, it wasn’t as if it was a secret or anything. They did patrols together and stuff, and now she would actually talk to him in the Great Hall instead of scream and shout at him. She was actually nice to James Potter, something that she hadn’t thought would ever happen.
Remembering that Snape was there, she turned and glared at him. “Shouldn’t you be going to class by now or something? Leave me alone and all of that?” She hissed at him. She couldn’t help but hate him right now, everything he stood for disgusted her to the highest degree.
